Anastasia Pagonis is making a splash. The 16-year-old is breaking swimming records. And stereotypes. How so? Anastasia is blind. But she's working to change people's minds about what that means. Today, the swimming pool is Anastasia's "happy place." But it wasn't always that way. When Anastasia lost her sight in 2018, she had to relearn everything. Even how to swim. The biggest problem was the pool wall. Because she couldn't see, she kept running into it. But Anastasia didn't give up. She and her coach worked to make swimming safe for her. They use a "tapper." It's a tool. Her coach uses it to tap her when it's time to turn. And then there's Radar. He's a friendly yellow Labrador who acts as Anastasia's guide dog. He helps her find her way around outside of the pool. He and Anastasia are getting ready for the 2021 Paralympic Games. Anastasia is swimming for Team USA! When she's not swimming, Anastasia is often online. She loves sharing pictures and videos. She uses them to show that people with impairments shouldn't be put "in a box." Even though she can't see, Anastasia still does the things she loves. Like dressing up. Or singing along to songs. And, of course, swimming!
