Although not reported in the Bible, according to belief, St. Peter, one of the apostles of Jesus and the first bishop of Rome, is buried here. In the place where the first church was built in the 4th century, the construction of today's building, which started in 1506, could only be completed in 1626. Contrary to popular belief, the church where many popes are buried is not a cathedral. St. Peter's basilica is visited by millions of tourists every year because of the rites organized by the pope living in the Vatican, Christians coming here to be pilgrims from various countries of the world, being the most important work of its time, hosting the unique works of Michelangelo and Bernini, and being the largest church in the world. The sculpture of Renaissance artist Michelangelo, "La Pietà", dated 1499, in which the lifeless body of the crucified Jesus is depicted in the lying position in the arms of Mary, his mother, is located in the chapel on the right at the entrance of the basilica.
